Is Shadow of Revan Worth Playing Again

BioWare released Star Wars: the Quondam Democracy in December 2011. Every bit nosotros arroyo the 10th anniversary of the game, I decided to effort playing over again this month. I spent motility of November playing through a few of the class stories and the Shadow of Revan, Knights of the Fallen Empire, Knights of the Eternal Throne, and Onslaught expansions. At least – that was my goal. I did go through a few class stories, but the story gets far less enjoyable throughout the expansions. While I had hoped some time and distance would ameliorate my stance, I only got more frustrated with the plot holes and lack of attention to detail.
All of that existence said, I don't think SWTOR is a bad game. Just an former game that is really starting to show its age. The lack of quality of life changes really shows, even after playing Guild Wars 2 (which, for reference, but came out a year later). Do the pros of the game outweigh the cons? Well…information technology'southward complicated.
SWTOR's Subpar Grapheme Creation

Much to my surprise, in my render to the game I constitute that my memory of character creation in Star Wars: the Sometime Commonwealth was in fact rose-colored. It is far worse than I idea. The face shapes are express and largely unattractive. While in other MMORPGs you can make most base models piece of work with tweaking, you lot don't even get the pick in SWTOR. The closest you get is adjusting the "complexion." Even and so, it's not corking. Additionally, the hair options are terrible. Near of them look weird in do with the "physics." Females definitely become ameliorate hair options, only I barely give them credit there.
Every bit far as the races go – well. Yous are given few options as a free player. Even subscribers have to get each race to level fifty before unlocking them for their "legacy." It's disappointing. While it adds to the "realism" of the game…well, frankly, I'm not looking for realism in my Star Wars game. Sad non distressing in that location. At least you lot can choose any course yous want. I'll give BioWare that – they didn't lock any classes behind a paywall.
The Dated Gameplay
Unfortunately, the combat system for Star Wars: the Old Republic felt quondam at the start of the game. As we arroyo 2022, it has not anile well. It feels clunky even compared to its contemporaries like Lord of the Rings Online. The UI customization is decent. However, the awkward skill layouts in a huge skill bar feels cluttered. Certain, you take a lot of skills. Why do we demand 50 skills that hardly do impairment in the name of "rest"? Information technology just feels bad after playing any more modernistic MMORPGS. I mean – we have games like Blackness Desert Online that go really experimental with their combat systems! Coming dorsum to SWTOR was hard to get used to.
Even elementary actions in game like talking to characters experience clunky in SWTOR compared to other games. Crafting is not intuitive and quite abrasive, honestly. The companions are nice but the AI behind them isn't up to par to do annihilation other than heal-bot. Why are the other options fifty-fifty bachelor if they can't evangelize? BioWare claims they want to update the gainsay system and gameplay with Legacy of the Sith coming December 14, 2021, but I'one thousand skeptical.
Star Wars the Old Republic's Greatest Forcefulness: Class Stories

Past far, the best part of SWTOR is the original story. Levels 1-50 are amazing. Each course has its own story and its own set of five unique companions. Your choices matter. You proceeds light side and night side points according to those choices (like to Knights of the Old Republic). The dialogue is witty and engaging. My favorite stories are the Imperial Agent, Sith Inquisitor, and Smuggler. I constitute the Trooper'southward story to be a scrap of a slog, along with the Bounty Hunter'southward and the Jedi Knight's – but really, each holds its own.
The companion friendships and romances are all fun to follow. Nearly of the companions are a joy to become to know and the voice actors did amazing jobs. I genuinely recollect these stories are worth playing for Star Wars fans. Seeing the Sith Empire and Galactic Democracy in these incarnations is a lore golden mine. Unfortunately, for all the amazing story telling in these stories, information technology all starts to fall apart in the expansions.
SWTOR's Downfall: Bad Expansion Writing

Admittedly, the writing for Star Wars: the Old Republic expansions is more of a ho-hum downwards slope than an immediate drop-off. The Shadow of Revan is actually one of my favorite arcs to play through. Coming together Theron Shan and Lana Beniko is exciting. The story is still at least somewhat congenital effectually your class. Sadly, that quality does not continue.
The spiral started with Knights of the Fallen Empire. Catapulted five years into the futurity, yous detect the Republic and Empire both under control by this new "Eternal Empire." Information technology was ruled past Emperor Vitiate, who this other empire knew as Valkorion, and…are you confused yet? It does not become better. Lana rescues you from carbonite. Yous're chased by new enemies and take a bunch of new allies who are…notably not your companions. Some of them come back in the main story, some are lazily-written side quests for subsequently. The convoluted plot chugs along and information technology feels similar the decisions are far less nuanced. You lot're either totally evil or a complete angel.
Knights of the Eternal Throne is no better. Valkorion'south family could take been incredibly interesting. Instead, his living son Arcann is magically cleansed of his evil (????) and his daughter Vaylin is…apparently just rotten to her cadre? Thanks, BioWare. I totally wanted to redeem the asshole but not the daughter who was caged and abused most of her life. I guess she's just too irrational. In the terminate, you either become an evil dictator or don't. How artistic. I totally experience similar all the story I've played through and so far has led up to that moment. Talk nigh bland and contrite!
So…is Star Wars: the Old Republic Worth Playing?
My reply is – it's complicated. I think if you're a veteran of the game, it might be worth returning to check out the new expansion. Replaying the form stories has been really fun. That alone made the ane calendar month worth of subscription I got for myself worth it. However, beyond that….I can't justify information technology. Subscribing is expensive and necessary to relish the full experience of the game.
New players probably shouldn't carp unless you take a friend to play with. At that place are so many mechanics to learn that could be condensed that information technology'south almost overwhelming. The competitors are just better at this point. If yous desire a Star Wars game that'southward ameliorate quality, even the onetime Knights of the One-time Democracy is a better value. All in all, I tin't say I recommend SWTOR ten years afterward. A shame, merely…I'll stick to other MMORPGs for now.
